A Woman Ranger with Blue Eyes and the Legend of the Thieves of Crooked Lake

Saturday, October 26, 1991, Crooked Lake, Pinckney State Park: Stormy Evening

We left Detroit at about 12:00 noon. Soon, I knew taht we actually should have left earlier. The trip from Detroit to Pinckney itself was not very long, but it took us about 2 hours to find the headquarters of Pinckney State Park.

I was surprised there that the ranger was a woman. She was very tall, but not thin. She had blue eyes. From the way she carried herself, I could see that she was spirited to her job. Oh yes, if you are a well-paid ranger, what more can you ask?

We picked a campsite with the view of Crooked Lake. Since we didn't want the neighbor to see us because the site was so open, we pitched the tent on bushes behind a pine tree. It seemed that the bushes under the tent's floor prevented water from flooding the floor.

We were so fortunate. I learned a lot today. Although it was raining almost all night long, we managed to stay in the tent. Of course there were some drips from the roof, but that didn't deter us from staying inside and talking.

Jess was doing his hand-made wig. We went to bed at 11 pm. We didn't really open our sleeping bags, because we didn't want to expose it to the dripping water. We just used the rolled sleeping bags as our pillows. The sky was dark at that time. It rained on and off that night.

At 3:30 in the morning, I woke up and turned on the light, a lantern made of from a used can, known as "Thomas Alfa Edison's Invention Kit". The tent was so cold. That was why I turned on the light. I just waited until the tent got warmer. It was around 4:30 am when the rain stopped. I was happy and opened the sleeping bag.

I woke up at 10:40 am. The sky was still cloudy. We cooked our lunch. We made omelets, just like the night before. After lunch, we walked around the area. We met many mountain bikers. There wasn't much beautiful scenery because most trees had falled their leaves. We packed up at 4:00 pm. Since we saw a pile of fire woods, which might have been left by some campers, we just loaded them onto the car. The woods had been stolen by the thieves of Crooked Lake!!
